AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has discussed potentially approaching Mamelodi Sundowns’ Senior Coach Manqoba Mngqithi to become the club’s new head coach.
Mngqithi was already in charge of Usuthu between July 2010 and September 2011 in the early stages of his coaching career.
After leaving AmaZulu, he had a very brief stint with Chippa United before spending one season with Golden Arrows before joining Pitso Mosimane as assistant at Sundowns.
When Mosimane left, the 51-year-old was initially instilled as co-coach alongside Rulani Mokwena, leading the club to a domestic treble last season, before his role changed with the technical team shake-up in October last year.
With his current contract at Chloorkop expiring by the end of the season, many have wondered whether he will leave and take up a head-coach role in the DStv Premiership.
There have been rumours AmaZulu could see him as their next head coach from the beginning of 2023/24 after the redeployment of Romain Folz, and Zungu didn’t close the door on the former teacher.
“The possibility of a Manqoba Mngqithi is a mouthwatering one indeed for AmaZulu,” he said on Radio2000, as per Thabiso Mosia.
“He would be no stranger to the club having coached here before. But we must also respect the fact that there’s an option on his current contract and we must then respect his employer.”
Zungu also clarified Folz’s role until the end of the season after he was redeployed as Technical Director, with former assistant Ayanda Dlamini being appointed as interim coach for the final six games of 2022/23.
“Folz is in our payroll and will be with us until the end of the season,” the AmaZulu boss added.
“I know he signed a contract extension recently and we were hoping to have him for long. But this is football and anything can happen from now. Nothing is certain in football.”
