Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has revealed that Ashley Du Preez was close to starting his side’s game against Golden Arrows, while Khama Billiat only started jogging recently.
Du Preez and Billiat were absent from the Chiefs squad as the Amakhosi beat Golden Arrows to end the year on a high.
Kamohelo Mahlatsi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo were handed rare starts, with many left wondering why Du Preez and Billiat didn’t make the squad.
Zwane later explained that both players are recovering from injuries, with Du Preez even set to start before telling his coach he didn’t feel ready.
“Khama started jogging this past weekend,” he told reporters.
“Ash was actually supposed to start the game but he came to me and said ‘coach, I’m not really comfortable’.
“I said to him ‘listen, we obviously don’t want to play a player that doubts himself’. We want a fit Ash as well.
“But he’s not far in terms of returning any given time. When we start training in two days time we’ll monitor him and check if he’s ready for the next game.
“If not, we’ll still play other players until he’s fit.”
Chiefs return to action on 7 January when they will host Sekhukhune United.
