Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has broken his silence on the criticism he received from head coach Rulani Mokwena.

Zungu spent three years at Sundowns before going to Portugal to join Vitoria Guimaraes in 2016.

However, after six years in Europe he opted to return to South Africa during the off-season after his contract with Ligue 2 side Amiens had come to and end.

But game-time has been rare for the KwaZulu Natal-born player midfielder, with Zungu featuring in just five games before the Carling Black Label Cup last weekend.

Ben10, as he is famously known, played the full match in the semi-final against AmaZulu and was part of the Carling Black Label Cup score-predictor launch this week.

At the event, he discussed the criticism of Mokwena in early October, after the coach had claimed he wasn’t completely happy with his progress.

“Actually, he played a massive role to bring me to Sundowns because I had other options,” Zungu told journalists.

“Coach Rulani, I always tell him that ‘you’re always not happy’. He always wants more and more.

“Obviously he told me first before he told the media that he is not happy. I knew and I know he demands more and more from me.

“For me, as I’ve mentioned, is to work hard. When I do get the opportunity to just play and do well.”

“Williams and Tebogo Mokoena won trophies with us. Sipho – despite his off-the-field stuff, won trophies with us. Modiba, Kekana won trophies with us.

“So for me the new trend of players like Luke Fleurs wanting a move (to Kaizer Chiefs), but didn’t win us anything. So what are you wanting a move for, based on what? For your own personal stuff?

“So when you think the club is a pathway for individual needs and aspirations, we can’t have those kinds of players in our club.”
