Orlando Pirates have entered the history books following their MTN8 final win over AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida on Saturday.
The Buccaneers beat Usuthu 1-0, thanks to Monnapule Saleng’s 25th minute free-kick which caught Veli Mothwa by surprise.
In doing so, Pirates became the first team to win the Top 8 tournament five times in the PSL era while also taking their tally of MTN8 trophies to four since 2010.
No any other team, in the PSL era, has won more Top 8 trophies than Pirates, and perhaps they indeed deserve to keep this trophy for good.
WHEN DID ORLANDO PIRATES WIN THE FIVE TOP 8 TROPHIES?
Pirates first won the Top 8 trophy in the PSL era in 2000 when BP was still the sponsors before waiting 10 years to win the MTN8.
Bucs successfully defended their MTN8 trophy in 2011 under the tutelage of Julio Leal, and they did again in 2020 when Josef Zinnbauer was still in charge.
Now, Pirates have done it again with Jose Riveiro in charge, and the 47-year-old became the first Spanish mentor to lift the trophy in South Africa.
