Kaizer Chiefs legend Marks Maponyane has explained what the Soweto giants need to change to end the lengthy trophy drought.

The seven-year barren spell remains a heavy burden for the current crop of players. Interestingly, Maponyane knows all about winning trophies as the yesteryear striker was part of Chiefs’ 80s “Golden Era”.

He won several cup competitions, including two league titles, while scoring an avalanche of goals for Amakhosi.

However, in recent years, Chiefs are yet to taste success, and their trophy cabinet is gathering dust.

The Glamour Boys had a chance to recapture some glory in the MTN8 but AmaZulu knocked them out in the semifinal. In spite of that, all is not lost for Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane and his troops.

LEAGUE AND NEDBANK CUP UP FOR GRABS

They are part of the chasing pack in the DStv Premiership in fourth place, seven points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after 13 games. And Chiefs still have the Nedbank Cup to fight for.

“All of them, the players [need to develop a strong work ethic],” Maponyane, who walked away with the South African Sports Hero of the Year award in 1984, told FARPost.

“If the Chiefs players give the commitment they showed against Pirates in every game. They can win a trophy or finish in a decent position in the league this season.

“They can win the Nedbank Cup if they continue in the same vein. You don’t need to have a game plan to win games, you’ve got to have a way of doing things, and that way is the winning way.

“If they keep that attitude and commitment [they had when they beat Pirates in the league], fighting for every ball and winning it, then that can change their fortunes.

“But then it goes back to reality, and reality is you can’t get the same performance and consistency in any of the teams in the league this season,” added the Footballer of the Year award in 1983 and 1987, Maponyane.
