Phakamani Mahlambi is currently being assessed by SuperSport United but the Siya crew has been informed that a move for the former SA youth international could be in jeopardy.
Mahlambi is looking to bounce back after he was released from his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns, following a host of loan spells with AmaZulu and Chippa United, respectively.
He has turned to his former coach in Gavin Hunt, who handed him his debut whilst on the books of Bidvest Wits as a budding teenager.
Now, as Hunt assesses whether to throw ‘Phaka’ a lifeline, Siya sources have informed the crew that there could be a spanner in the works regarding a possible move.
“He arrived at the club heavily overweight, which is natural because he has not played a game in over a year,” the source informed the crew.
“The weight gain was also as a result of an injury that he was carrying,” the source added.
Mahlambi’s last game in the topflight came in September 2021 when he came on as a second half substitute in a 2-1 loss against Stellenbosch, thereafter, the 24-year-old was ruled out for the rest of the campaign, due to an Achilles tendon injury.
With Hunt having signed two of his former players in Thulani Hlatshwayo and Ricardo Goss already, it remains to be seen whether the 58-year-old will take a gamble on the prodigious Mahlambi.
