As the preparations for the new season at Mamelodi Sundowns have gone into overdrive, another top overseas-based player is linked with the club.
The club is believed to have finalized a deal to bring Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil to Chloorkop, while reports suggest that the DStv Premiership champions have closed in on a Chilean midfielder Marcelo Allende.
News reaching the Siya crew is that the Brazilians are showing interest in Nigerian midfielder Vincent Onovo who is plying trade in Europe.
While it is not yet clear how Downs are planning to deal with their foreign quota for the 2022/23 season as they currently have all the five spots permitted per PSL club per season occupied, sources in Nigeria have confirmed to the Siya crew that Onovo is one of the players whose names have been discussed at the former African champions.
Onovo is a 26-year-old defensive midfielder who is contracted to Újpest FC in the Hungarian top tier and has previously been on the books of Randers FC in Denmark.
“There is interest from Sundowns in Vincent Onovo. He is Nigerian midfielder who currently plays in Hungary. Enquiries have been made on the player’s availability though there isn’t anything agreed to at the moment between the two clubs,” said the source.
In their 2021/22 season squad, Downs had Peter Shalulile, Gastón Sirino, Pavol Safranko, Divine Lunga and Erwin Saavedra as the five registered foreigners.
