Colombian forward Leonardo Castro's continued stay in the PSL will have further hurdles constraining him upon the expiry of his contract with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the month.
Chiefs have already confirmed that they will not be renewing his deal after four and a half years with the club.
Castro leaves Amakhosi having failed to score in 13 appearances after battling with injury in his last season, which evidently contributed to the club’s decision not to renew.
He also never reached double figures in all the seasons that he spent at Naturena even when he played regularly with 34 appearances (2018/19) and 39 (2020/21).
Ultimately in four and a half years, he scored 29 goals.
Besides issues related to the weight of his contract, Castro is still playing as a foreigner despite qualifying for permanent residence having played in the country for seven years.
"He didn’t acquire permanent residence. If he signs under any club then he will apply for permanent residence and play as a South African," Baber Siddique, his manager, confirms to KickOff.
"For him to stay in South Africa it should be with any club that can offer him a reasonable contract closer to what he was getting at Chiefs.
"Apart from that Leo also wants to stay here for the sake of his children’s education plus his wife likes South Africa so she prefers to stay here which is why we all want him to stay here.
"We have engaged a few clubs but some other clubs have full foreign spaces so they cannot take him," says Siddique.
As reported by this website at the beginning of this month, Castro is set to return home with options of playing in the Colombian second division.
