Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on one of their top targets in the club overhaul with Stellenbosch managing to deflect the interest of the men from Naturena.
Stellies have already lost two players to Chiefs in Zitha Kwinika and Ashley Du Preez, but were adamant on not losing a third player to Amakhosi.
As reported by the Siya crew on Monday, Chiefs expressed an interest in the services of Stellies’ 20-year-old centre back Athenkosi Mcaba who experienced a breakout 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.
However, word reaching the crew’s desk is that Stellies want to hold onto the Bafana Bafana starlet and as a result, have tied him down to a new long-term contract, deflecting Chiefs’ interest in the Springs-born defender.
Having lost Kwinika, Alan Robertson and Robyn Johannes, coach Steve Barker’s side have been left thin in terms of centre back options and were understandably keen to hold onto one of their best performers in the last campaign.
Mcaba made 14 appearances for the Cape winelands outfit this season and was included in coach Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana team who did battle against Guinea and France back in March.
He is also nominated for the PSL Young Player of the Year award alongside Kwame Peprah and Luke Fleurs.
