In Orlando Pirates’ planning for next season after yet another disappointing campaign with no trophies won, the club will have goalkeeping as one of its main priorities in strengthening the squad and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has emerged as a target once again.
For several seasons now, the SuperSport United captain has had Bucs enquire about his availability, although in all the previous attempts the Soweto giants have been unsuccessful in convincing the Tshwane club to sell the experienced shot-stopper.
With the Buccaneers facing the likelihood of shortage of experience in their goalkeeping department for the new season, indications are that attempts will be made again in pursuit of Williams’ signature.
As reported earlier, , AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa has had his name added to Pirates’ list of targets, with the Bafana man also nearing the end of his contract at the Durban-based club.
With Wayne Sandilands’ Pirates future in doubt after the veteran goalkeeper failed to make a single appearance in all competitions this season, and with the 38-year-old also set to see his contract come to an end next month, Pirates have prioritized their search for a goalkeeper to add to the squad for next season.
Furthermore, indications are that Bucs have still not offered Siyabonga Mpontshane a new contract, as the 36-year-old will also see his current deal ending in a few months’ time.
With Boalefa Pule having managed to get a run under caretaker coach Andre Arendse in the last four matches of the season and having kept a clean sheet in two of those in the absence of the injured Williams, indications are that Matsatsantsa could finally be open to allowing their long-serving number one to move on in search of greener pastures.
According to sources, Pirates are monitoring the situation closely and are expected to make a formal offer for the Gqeberha-born player’s services at the end of the season.
Williams’ contract with SuperSport runs until 2024, having signed his latest extension – a four-and-a-half-year deal, in January 2020.
