Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane has revealed the person who played a key role in ensuring his coaching career got off the ground.

Now, in charge of Amakhosi as caretaker coach, Zwane has paid homage to a Mamelodi Sundowns technical team member.

Before Chiefs’ 1-1 draw with DStv Premiership champions, Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Sunday, Zwane and Downs senior coach Steve Komphela, shared a warm hug.

“I have a special relationship with coach Steve,” Zwane, who formed a close bond with Komphela from his exciting playing days in Chiefs colours, said to the media after the game.

“I started coaching while I was still playing; I used to coach my own team that was campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League; at that time, it was still Vodacom League. When I came here [joined Chiefs in 2002], coach Steve was my coach. He was the assistant coach to Coach Muhsin [Ertugral].

“And before then, I knew him as one of the leaders, one of my favourite defenders, so from that time he went into the national team, and when I was caught up in the national team with Carlos Queiroz, he was assistant to him at the time, and we bonded very well and became very close.”

Zwane added that his relationship with Komphela became stronger when Komphela returned to Chiefs as a head coach in 2015.

“It happened that he came to join the club, and the chemistry was second to none. We shared a lot, and we were very close,” explained Zwane, who worked his way up coaching in the Chiefs development ranks.

“The gap between the reserve team and the first team was very close because we would play practise matches and share ideas.

“Actually he played a huge big in helping me, coach Steve, not only him, there are many other coaches as well who played a big role, but coach Steve for the fact that he was head coach at Chiefs we had that relationship and even know we still talk and we share a lot of things because we are all students of the game,” concluded Zwane.
