Denis Onyango’s feat of becoming the most decorated player in South Africa has left Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena feeling emotional.

The Ugandan made history on Wednesday evening when he became the first player to lift the PSL title on nine separate occasions.

Three league titles with SuperSport and six more with Sundowns tells an incredible story for the veteran goalkeeper who has now overtaken the likes of Hlompho Kekana to stand in a league of his own.

Paying homage to the 36-year-old after their goalless draw to Cape Town City that sealed their fifth consecutive league title, Mokwena reflected on how Onyango has gone on to achieve greatness, despite his humble beginnings.

“It’s very difficult to speak about Denis without being emotional because of what he has done not only for Sundowns but what he has done is incredible for these young kids that are in Uganda. You’ve got to go to Uganda to understand the environment, not just from a political sense but the socio-economic background that he comes from,” Mokwena told journalists.

“And to get someone to be the best goalkeeper on the African continent and to win that award from humble beginnings to achieve not only with Sundowns, but with Bidvest Wits and SuperSport, and that type of story is one that many footballers would be happy to write.” He added.

With his latest league win, Onyango has now accumulated 16 trophies with Sundowns since 2014.
