Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker could not hide his delight after his team went on level with Mamelodi Sundowns at the summit of the log.
Following their 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, Stellenbosch remain unbeaten and have appeared to be a completely different team to the side that they were last season which fought against relegation.
While Barker has urged his players to remain humble and to continue working hard, the coach confirmed that it sometimes feels unreal that they have made such huge progress with their impressive start to the season.
It was the first time in the history of the club that Stellies secured a victory against Amakhosi and it was all thanks to Ashley Du Preeze’s goal.
“In all honesty, you do sometimes just need to pinch yourself and understand what we are doing at this current stage of the season. But it’s a long season and there’s still 21 matches to be played and we just got to enjoy the moment while it still going well and capitalize on it and just continue laying good foundations. So that as the season progresses, we’d be able to cope with it a lot better than we have perhaps in the past,” said Barker, speaking to the media.
