According to reliable sources who informed Ukrabet that Mokwena, his co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi and senior coach Steve Komphela, were not seeing eye-to-eye despite the success of winning the inaugural DStv Premiership title last season in the first year of the new-look technical team arrangement.
Mokwena was asked during a press conference building up to their league tie against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday to comment.
“I read the article. And I was expecting this question already. It’s a difficult one to answer and not to come across as not being honest, but at the same time to try and protect the club,” the coach told journalists.
“We have a very big game on the weekend – our focus and energy must be on that. But also on the corner of my brain there is the importance of clarifying some of the things. It’s a pity because sometimes some of the things that come out do so and you are like ‘oh my goodness, how did this get out?’. For me that is probably the biggest problem, having a mole and having people that report certain things to the media. We should not have people in our club that go about that sort of behaviour. That should not be allowed.”
Mokwena then confirmed the alleged incident that the Siya crew reported took place at their Chloorkop base where he was said to have been undermined by Mngqithi.
“In any organisation or household, whenever there is any relations, of course there’s going to be one or two squabbles and disagreements. And those should not be blown out of proportion,” the coach explained.
“But I get disappointed personally when I am on the other side – to be honest with you, this question should maybe be given to coach Manqoba because what was reported in the media, there’s an element of truth to it and to me the coach apologised and we move on. We focus on what is important for Mamelodi Sundowns, and that’s it. I have got nothing more to say about it.”
