Former Kaizer Chiefs star defender Fabian McCarthy has provided sound advice for Bafana Bafana’s rising stars Ethan Brooks and Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
The duo played a key part in Bafana’s 1-0 win over Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday, Brooks ran the show in midfield while Hlongwane found the all-important goal that sealed the win for Hugo Broos’ men.
Now, former Bafana Bafana defender McCarthy, who these days turns out as a television pundit amongst other things, has provided sound advice for the duo, who according to the Amakhosi legend, is destined for Europe.
“They got the call-up and when that happens, you get the opportunity to play. They now have to go back to their teams and perform week in and week out. They need to change how they were training and do more. Because what they do every day will show on the field of play with the team and from there, we will see it in the national team,” he told the Siya crew.
“I recall when I was at Bloemfontein Celtic I was playing in the national team and the coach would say to me “Look Fabi, I am not screaming at you for no reason, but you come from the national team. I want you to stay there, and I want you to show the guys that you work hard and perform at training and in games you must be our best player because you come from the national team.”
“So these boys have to sacrifice and work hard for them to get to Europe, because I feel we are not getting too many players into Europe, where its different in terms of your own development and everything around you,” he added.
