Kaizer Chiefs defender Njabulo Ngcobo has opened up about his late inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Ghana.
Ngcobo was already home in KZN after Amakhosi had given the team a bit of a break, but he quickly returned to Johannesburg when he received the late call-up to coach Hugo Broos’ squad. Despite not getting game-time at Naturena since joining from Swallows FC, Ngcobo is a player the national team’s technical team clearly admires.
He did well during the COSAFA Cup and must have left a lasting impression on the coaches.
“We all know that if the time comes, you are happy to be in the Bafana Bafana squad. For me being here, I am always ready to come. I was already home because Kaizer Chiefs had given us a break, so I was already not in Johannesburg. When I got the call, I took my stuff and came to Johannesburg,” the defender told the senior national team’s media department.
“It means a lot that people believe in me and want to see me in the national team. Even myself, this is something I always wanted, and the time has come, so I am happy to be here. I am always happy to see the team playing good football. In our national team, we have quality players who can play football from the back. What I bring to the national team is to help my teammates relax and play football.”
Bafana take on Zimbabwe at National Sports Stadium in Harare on Friday, September 3 and will then host Ghana at FNB Stadium on Monday.
