Orlando Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids has given fans an insight into what lies ahead for the club following the departure of head coach Josef Zinnbauer.
On Monday, the German mentor vacated his post after two-and-a-half years, citing family reasons for his departure; however, it did not come as a surprise.
The Siya crew reported back in July that Zinnbauer’s was not safe in his position as Pirates’ head coach despite him still holding the role in the preparation for the new season. Zinnbauer had been under immense pressure following the team’s failure in their pursuit of the DStv Premiership title, finishing in a disappointing third place, which saw them miss out on a CAF Champions League qualifying spot.
Now, as the club prepares for life without Zinnbauer, assistant coach Davids has given insight into the club’s contingency plans as he, alongside Mandla Ncikazi, look to take the club forward.
“We have to assess what we have on the ground. At the moment we’ve had two training sessions [without JZ] and we have two more training sessions and so far, it has been fantastic - but we have two more training sessions to look at the players and see which of those are ready mentally, on a physical level, tactically, emotionally after what they have been through and then pick the best players for the match on Saturday,” Davids told the media.
Pirates will kick off their DStv Premiership campaign against Stellenbosch at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off for the match is at 15:00.
