Siya sources have suggested Thabo Cele’s reported collapsed move abroad could open the door for Kaizer Chiefs to sign one of their targets.
Cele looked set to join Polish side Radomiak Radom having spent a few days at the club and news coming out of there was that the midfielder had all but agreed to make the switch from Portugal.
However, in a shock twist, the deal fell through after a local Polish publication alleged that Cele’s representatives had “exorbitant financial expectations” which Radom couldn’t meet.
As such, the player has remained a free agent.
Now, the Siya crew had recently reported that Amakhosi had joined the race for Cele’s signature as interest in the player grew while he was at the Tokyo Olympics with the national U23 squad.
Indications then were that Maritzburg United had also made contact with the player’s camp to enquire whether Cele would be keen to leave Europe and return to his home province, KwaZulu-Natal.
Expect the Team of Choice to follow up yet again now that the player’s next move has fallen through, though they could have stiff competition from Chiefs.
The Siya crew has been led to believe that Cele is still considering his other options abroad as that is what he still prefers, having never played in the Premier Soccer League.
Cele went from the KZN Academy in 2016 straight to Portugal, so his representatives probably have a good network in Europe to be able to find him a club there, even if it’s in the lower division.
Poland seemed the next destination, but that move has now collapsed with Chiefs and Maritzburg watching on and set to reignite their interest.
