Gavin Hunt is ready to return to the dugout and take up a new challenge as he puts his short spell at Kaizer Chiefs behind him.

Contacted by the Siya crew, the coach’s agent, John Wilson, confirmed that the four-time league winner has attracted interest locally, but added Hunt would carefully consider his next step.

The 56-year-old was appointed Amakhosi coach in September last year – not long after Bidvest Wits, a side he’s coached for seven years, had been sold.

But his spell at Naturena is probably one he would want to quickly forget, having only been Chiefs coach for eight months.

“Like any top-flight coach, Gavin wants to get back onto the training ground as soon as possible. But in saying that he won’t rush into any project,” Wilson told the Siya crew.

“Naturally, when a coach with his pedigree becomes available, there is interest. But it has to be the right environment. He has taken some time out over the last few weeks since leaving Chiefs and done some brilliant work as a pundit for SuperSport. The focus, of course, is to return to coaching sooner rather than later – that’s all he’s done for more than two decades and he is still extremely motivated and has the desire to win.”

Reports surfaced last month that Marumo Gallants (previously TTM, the side that took over Wits) had enquired about Hunt’s availability.

But the Limpopo outfit appear to have turned their attention elsewhere with Belgian Patrick de Wilde and Spanish mentor Pablo Franco Martin being linked to the job, which was held by Dylan Kerr until the latest contract saga.

Hunt also worked at SuperSport United, where he won three of the league titles under his belt before moving to Wits and ending their 96-year championship drought.
