Thabo Matlaba joined the Dube Birds in October last year and it was understood then that he’d signed a one-year contract.
Given that the season has just ended, naturally there has been questions over the ex-Orlando Pirates skipper’s future.
But Swallows chairman David Mogashoa has now confirmed to the Siya crew that ‘Festival’ will not be leaving the Birds’ nest anytime soon.
“Thabo Matlaba’s two-year option was activated last month. He remains a Dube Bird for the next two seasons,” the Swallows boss revealed.
The versatile 33-year-old was impressive in his return to Gauteng having spent a year at Black Leopards two seasons ago, and under coach Brandon Truter he was able to make 22 appearances in all domestic competitions..
Matlaba was played in several positions, making him an invaluable member of the squad as Swallows finished sixth in the DStv Premiership.
The Dube Birds will make a few more decisions over the coming weeks in terms of new recruits and players like Sifiso Hlanti and Kgaogelo Sekgota leaving for Kaizer Chiefs, while Njabulo Ngcobo is also expected to join them at Naturena.
Speaking to the media on the final day of the season, coach Truter said there would be a total of six players leaving the club, but he did not mention any names.
