Kaizer Chiefs could backtrack on their decision to sign striker Ruzaigh Gamildien from Swallows, the Siya crew has been informed.

The two clubs had initially agreed a deal in principle for the Dube Birds top goalscorer before the season concluded, with a one-year contract understood to have been proposed subject to Gamildien agreeing personal terms.

All this was done at the time Gavin Hunt was still Amakhosi coach, though Siya sources told the crew at the time that the player wasn’t necessarily being pursued at his request – he wanted Bradley Grobler instead.

Now, with Hunt no longer in the picture following his sacking two weeks ago and the club roping in Stuart Baxter for a second spell at Naturena, it’s emerged that Gamildien’s mooted move to Chiefs could be off.

The Siya crew has been informed by insiders from both clubs that it’s now likely that the Glamour Boys could backtrack, despite an offer having been tabled for the player and agreed in principle a few months ago.

It’s not yet clear whether Baxter, who was confirmed as the new head coach only last week, has had a say, but it would have been unusual if the Englishman didn’t know which players Chiefs were lining up for the new season.

Ultimately, chairman Kaizer Motaung makes the call on which players the club should sign and if the Gamildien signing has fallen flat, then the Amakhosi boss would have also weighed in, especially given the backlash when the Siya crew first reported the club’s interest in a player who is 32 years old, and had spent the last several seasons in obscurity before Swallows signed him from Chippa United in September.

He scored 11 goals in 26 matches from all competitions.
