Prince Dube pledges future to Tanzania’s Azam

Zimbabwean forward Prince Dube, who had a torrid spell at SuperSport United in 2017, has pledged his future to Azam FC amidst interest from Tanzania giants Simba SC.

Dube scored his 12th goal of the season on Sunday as Azam edged Young Africans 1-0 in a Tanzania Premier League encounter played at the Chamazi Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The immaculate 86th minute winner, struck from 25 yards out, took his tally to 12 goals in the League, making him the leading top scorer despite missing two months of action due to injury. Simba’s Meddie Kagere is in second position with 11 goals.

It was sweet revenge for Azam, who lost the first leg on a similar score line. Ironically, Dube broke his left hand’s ulna [the long bone found in the forearm that stretches from the elbow to the smallest finger] in that encounter last year in November, forcing him out for about eight weeks.

“I am an Azam player, I can’t talk about Simba when I’m contracted to Azam. I am focused on playing for Azam. I’m not the type of player that will jump from one team to the other,” Dube said in a post-match interview.

He praised his teammates for helping him settle in quickly at the club after joining them during the pre-season.

“This game is not all about me, it’s all about my teammates so I just want to dedicate this to everyone around Azam. It’s team effort,” he added.

“It was a good goal for me, but I am more focused on helping the team to win more games, so I am grateful that I helped the team to win the game today."

The former Highlanders striker added that he now understood the Tanzania League was fast and a bit on the physical side.

“I know the Tanzania League is more physical, I just have to pick myself wherever they kick me, I just have to continue to do my best for the team.”

Dube, who became Zimbabwe’s 2019 Soccer Star of the Year second runner-up, downplayed eyeing the Golden Boot Award, saying his focus was on helping the team.

“I think that every striker will wish for that (the Golden Boot Award), but I’m more focused on helping the team win more games. Of course, it’s every striker’s wish to win the Golden Boot, but the team comes first.”
