Leletu Skelem has been making headlines lately with his name been thrown in alongside a list of players Amakhosi have earmarked to sign next season when the club’s FIFA ban is finally lifted and Gavin Hunt – if he is still in charge – can reinforce his squad with.
In an interview with Kick-Off last week, the attacker agreed he’d relish the chance to play for the Soweto giants.
But he refused any knowledge of their interest in his services.
The Siya crew asked Barker during a press conference how he, especially given his past experience with the so-called big clubs poaching his young players while he was at AmaTuks, was handling the rumours.
“I think it’s important to firstly manage the person before you manage the player in this situation.
Leletu has had a lot of challenges of late and we are here to support him,” Barker said after Stellenbosch faced Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend.
“He is our player until the end of the season and beyond. So it is just about giving him confidence and allowing him to keep developing in to the footballer we know he can be for us.
“We do not let the noise get too much in the way of things. Leletu just needs to keep on working hard and we are here to support him and allow him to keep on growing as a person and as a footballer.
He is committed to the club and he just needs to continue working hard to get himself into the starting XI.”
